First Pass local knowledge

Know the roads. Train the decisions.

Choose your test centre to see the local road types worth practising, where learners commonly feel under pressure and the safe routine to use.

Not a route to memorise

DVSA does not publish current routes. These guides turn recurring local road features into focused practice—not a prediction of your test.

Four detailed guides

Choose a test centre

01Stevenage

Town-centre exits, linked roundabouts and changing pace

3 Drapers Way, Stevenage, SG1 3DT. Confirm the exact location and arrival instructions on your booking confirmation.

Start & finish

Drapers Way → Primett Road → Lytton Way

Train: calm observations, correct road position and reading the first instruction before moving.

Watch: rushing because the test has just started or relaxing before it has finished.

Roundabout chain

Lytton Way & Fairlands Way

Train: read each sign separately, choose the lane early and reset mirrors after every exit.

Watch: treating consecutive roundabouts as one manoeuvre and missing new markings.

Higher-pressure decision

Gresley Way approaches

Train: progressive braking, lane discipline and a positive entry only when the gap is safe.

Watch: late lane changes, drifting on the roundabout or hesitation after a safe gap appears.

Urban control

Bedwell, Six Hills Way & residential roads

Train: mini-roundabout observation, meeting traffic, parked-car clearance and pedestrian scanning.

Watch: looking only right, cutting mini-roundabouts or driving too close to parked vehicles.

What a strong drive looks like

  • You identify the next lane before the approach becomes busy.
  • Your speed is settled before the give-way line, not on it.
  • You keep observing while waiting rather than staring at one vehicle.
  • You make normal progress when the gap is genuinely safe.
  • After a mistake or missed direction, you continue safely and reset.
Instructor drill

Three-pass practice

  1. Talk-through: say signs, mirrors, lane and gap out loud.
  2. Prompted drive: instructor asks only “What is changing?”
  3. Independent drive: repeat without help and review one decision.
